THE BRIEF
The biennial Bristol Festival of Puppetry is a celebration of puppetry on stage and on screen that attracts visitors and artists worldwide with its unique programme of film and performance. Event organisers, Puppet Place, needed an animation collateral pack for screens; including festival teasers, trailer and idents for use in-cinema to accompany each film programme screening. Stop motion puppet animation was a natural choice as the artform is part of the puppetry family.
OUR PROCESS
The creative brief called for a playful, punchy short that would reflect the festival's alternative and diverse programme of events, setting the tone for the festival overall and featuring characters from the existing creative identity. Claymation provided a great means to realise the characters in 3D and give a quirky, fun feel that could appeal to children and adults alike. As the short was required for delivery across a number of different screen based outputs, it was produced to work across a range of aspect ratios and resolutions, whilst being easily adaptable to different edits and formats.
THE RESULTS
In the run up to the festival, teaser sequences were released on social media to build interest, followed by a video trailer of the forthcoming programme highlights titled with the short that hit high engagement. The short was also used as an in-cinema ident to introduce each screening in the BFP film programme, and on outdoor screens in Bristol city centre to advertise the festival prior to the event.
