Wind Chaser
THE BRIEF
At the heart of this Christmas advertising campaign for leading Malaysian telecoms provider DIGI, is the true story of the first Malaysian female fighter pilot Patricia Yapp. In this tale, a young girl is inspired by her father to become a pilot with the simple gift of a paper aeroplane. Directors Think Tank approached us to create a stop motion animation sequence for this mixed media advert, which contained multiple animated sequences by different animation artists, all connected by a live action narrative.
OUR PROCESS
We were tasked with designing characters based on the live action talent and storyboarding the stop motion sequence to seamlessly fit within the live action narrative. Despite its short running time, the stop motion sequence required intricate technical design to realise the main puppets, supporting models and skyscape environments. The handcrafted elements included natural materials, such as cotton wool clouds. Digital compositing in post enabled us to seamlessly combine the practical stop motion into the final animation sequence.
THE RESULTS
The advertising camapign was released across social media and broadcast on TV just before Christmas in Malaysia. The film was described by Mashable South East Asia as ‘one of the most heartwarming Christmas ads from Malaysia to date’ and was a well needed heartwarming story with beautiful animation at its core.
